The star has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the UK's independent music venues.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his new release his work was declared the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the vital role local spots played in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the shows I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped venues that were facing imminent closure due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained funding support in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from concerts in large arenas backs the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to give his award funds to good deeds.

In the band earned the trophy in 1996 for their record their work, lead singer the singer declared that the band would donate their winnings to the organization War Child.

That year, rapper and singer the artist split her bounty across several good causes, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite told the media.

Two years ago, they contributed their funds to the community center that nurtured their act, alongside other local music groups.

Also winners that year the group contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," remarked vocalist Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in the city and the second in the city were purchased under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
