The Actress Expresses Discussing Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ That’s Ripping the Country Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she no longer feels suitable to speak out regarding the Trump presidency, worried it could worsen unhelpful debate and increase separation across the country.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Explains Lawrence
In a recent interview, she commented, “When Trump was first in office, I thought I was acting frantically like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, election after election, celebrities fail to influence at all on electoral choices.”
She continued, “What’s the point? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has previously been open about voting for both conservative and liberal candidates over the years. Growing up with a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she voted for John McCain in the 2008 election prior to switching to the Democratic party and revealing she recognized during President Obama’s term that supporting the GOP was opposing her own rights as a woman.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she stated that Donald Trump’s election would be “the end of the world” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. More recently, she gave her endorsement to Vice President Harris, “since I think she’s an amazing candidate and I trust that she will do whatever she can to defend women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
The star was aligned with most of Hollywood in her rejection of Trump as a presidential contender, but the minimal impact public figures have over the public choices was underscored by Trump’s victory.
“Another four years appears changed,” noted she about Trump’s presidency. “As he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for four years. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”
Current Projects
Lawrence is currently promoting the drama, Lynne Ramsay’s drama in which she portrays a new mother who struggles with her emotional state in the countryside. Speaking at a media event for the project in Venice, the star commented on the situation in the Middle East: “I’m terrified. It’s mortifying. What’s taking place is equivalent to a atrocity and it’s terrible.”
Additional Thoughts
Lawrence added by expressing that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the conversations of U.S. political debates currently and how that is going to be normalised to the younger generation today. It’s going to be standard to them that elected officials deceive.”
The actor attempted to refocus frustration about the situation to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she advised, in what many took to be a allusion to the recent commitment endorsed by thousands of arts community members to refuse engagement with Israeli film institutions.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim aged 22 for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, is attracting awards attention for her work in her latest project. While Ramsay has denied the plot being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, the actress shared that she identified with aspects of her character’s journey after the arrival of her youngest child, not long after filming concluded.
“I felt anxiety about my child,” she explained, “just picturing every potential danger, and then doubting everything that I was attempting. I was seeing a therapist, but I got on a drug called Zurzuvae and I continued it for 14 days and it was effective.”
Professional Experiences
The actor also mentioned regarding the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the project while she was some months pregnant and limited physically.
“It feels nice,” she remarked, about having to set aside self-consciousness. “Honestly, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
