Space Traveler Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
