Pacific Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Sum of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The winning bid for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and overseas.
"The year's tuna signals good luck," stated the company president, a notable bidder at the annual first sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Past
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," noting, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared before you knew it."
This latest purchase surpasses his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to break his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its restaurants nationwide.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one happy patron.
