No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
