Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
