"When are you chatting with Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have openly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos often show them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"And thus all is invited to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
